Start by looking through magazines and catalogues to collect a scrapbook of ideas. Collect paint charts and wallpaper samples and try to think from scratch. Even if you have elements of your room you want to keep, think in terms of a blank canvas so you can work out exactly what you want. The master bedroom should include a bed; ample storage for clothes, unless you are in the enviable position of having a separate dressing room; bedside storage and display areas for alarm clocks, books, drinks and so on: a chair, not only to sit on but to provide a place to drape clothes when you are in a hurry to change: and a well-lit, preferably full-sized, mirror at which to do your make-up and hair. If you have an en suite bathroom, you can use the mirror there to do your make-up but avoid relying on the family bathroom for such activities. This would prevent other family members from gaining access to the room when the family is preparing to go out, slowing down the whole process. The bed is the central feature of most bedrooms, and it should be positioned within the room to allow maximum movement around it.
